Jeanne Baret
Jeanne is a 16’ cat ketch with a snug cuddy designed and built by Ed Foster of Northern California about 2012, and spent a decade abandoned and unmaintained by a careless owner. My partner acquired her in 2024 and we began the process of bringing her back to life. My part was mostly the rigging; using some lovely little blocks made by Endre Merck, I stropped and reeved them all with hemp line and added some fancywork touches. In the next year or so, we will sew up a new suit of sails for her…possibly out of flax linen. Jeanne is named for the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, back in the 1760’s with the Bougainville expedition—disguised as a man.
